2014 COHNA Conference
The Canadian Occupational Health Nurses Association (COHNA) held their 2014 conference in Saint John, New Brunswick, from 30 Sep to 1 Oct 2014.
The NB Occupational Health Nurses Group met at the DEC Hospital in Fredericton on October 18, 2013. Our guest speaker was Nancy Lindsay, Chief Privacy Officer for Horizon Health Network. Ms. Lindsay presented an overview of three privacy laws, one federal and two provincial, which apply to nursing practice in New Brunswick. She also provided guidelines for appropriate use of email and company intranet sites. A lively discussion followed regarding acceptable and unacceptable uses of social media such as Facebook or Twitter. We are grateful to Ms Lindsay for sharing her valuable knowledge and insights which will help us to ensure our practices are in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. A short business meeting concluded the day with planning for our National Conference to be held in Saint John on Sep 30 & Oct 1, 2014 on the theme "Workplace Wellness Solutions".
May 23, 2013 marked the Spring meeting of the NBOHNG-RIISTNB at the Nurses Association of New Brunswick office on Regent Street in Fredericton. Robin Ward of the Canadian Mental Health Association addressed the group on the topic of "Psychological Health & Safety in the Workplace". The presentation covered specific hazards to psychological health which could exist or occur in workplaces as well as a process to identify and reduce these hazards. We thank Ms. Ward for providing a practical approach to fostering mental health, a vital component of any Health & Safety program. Our annual general meeting was held in the afternoon, including election of officers.
